Teenaged Peanuts? Good Grief!
Pigpen is an obsessive-compulsive neat freak, Sally has turned Goth and Lucy's new home is an institution - M&D Productions' Artistic Director Ken Martin. and a talented student cast will explore the radically altered lives of these "Peanuts" characters in their production of Bert V. Royal's "Dog Sees God: Confessions of a Teenage Blockhead."
The dramatic-comic play, which includes adults themes, content and language, will play Thursday through Saturdays, Nov. 5-21 at 7:30 p.m. in Your Theatre in North Conway. Set during Charlie Brown (C.B.'s) teen years, "Dog Sees God" finds C. B. (Eric Jordan) distraught by the death of Snoopy, a loss that forces him to question his beliefs about the his own life. When he turns to his friends for help, C.B. realizes they all have their own serious issues to face, including drug/alcohol abuse, eating disorders, peer pressure and bullying, among others.
These difficult but universal problems, said Martin, are what drew him to direct "Dog Sees God," an "emotional show that depicts a lot of issues that hit close to home." Martin, who first read the play in August, added that "It might seem a wild and irreverent leap from the two-dimensional comforts of the comic strip, but it pays to remember that it was a gently dark undertone and a daring dose of psychological realism that made Schultz's work such a pioneer success on the funny pages."
Over the past six weeks, the cast which includes Mary Moody as Sally (C.B.'s Sister), Rafe Matregrano as Linus (Van), Rebekah Bushey as Lucy (Van's Sister), Matthew Stoker of Fryeburg as Beethoven (Schroeder) Amy Smullen as Tricia (Peppermint Patty), Ellen Hill as Marcy, and Billy Cavanaugh as Matt (Pigpen), has worked at keeping the emotions going from scene to scene, this has been one of the biggest challenges for the cast of eight student actors.
Martin said he hopes that the production will "open people's eyes" to the serious issues that all teenagers face. "The play deals with many issues that affect everyone at some point in life, so I hope people leave with a better understanding that these are serious issues that do need to be discussed," he explained.
